Well put! More folks need to read this. I’ve had to deal with people’s jealousies most of my life simply for being a curious, positive, and multi-able person. It took years to realize what you very precisely say in this article: it’s their problem, not mine! Thanks for the reinforcement!

Tautoko Paul and Nathan. As a Maori child and teen growing up in rural Northland my experiences were similar, with the added layer of disapproval from Maori peers who valued conformity and group identity above all else. It is also why I dont think I will ever fully embrace te reo Maori, simply on the grounds that a language of a few thousand words does not allow precision, poetic though it may be.
