As a Maori child and teen growing up in rural Northland my experiences were similar, with the added layer of disapproval from Maori peers who valued conformity and group identity above all else. It is also why I dont think I will ever fully embrace te reo Maori, simply on the grounds that a language of a few thousand words does not allow precision, poetic though it may be.
